NSDR vs Yoga Nidra: What Is the Difference?

NSDR is a broad label for non-sleep deep rest. Yoga nidra is a particular guided practice with yogic roots, often including an intention. A yoga nidra recording may be used as NSDR, but the labels do not tell you everything about its structure or ending.

Hand-carved sage and slate ribbons overlap beneath the heading Two Paths to Rest, with the Yonida closed-eyes symbol.

Two names, overlapping practices

If you arrived through Andrew Huberman, you may know the initials before the practice. Huberman uses NSDR for methods that lead into deep relaxation with some awareness present. His guide includes yoga nidra and other guided approaches. Yoga nidra has a longer history and its own teaching traditions; changing the label does not erase those roots.

A typical recording moves attention through bodily sensations and breathing, with periods of quiet. Yoga nidra may also include a sankalpa: a short personal intention. The precise sequence varies between teachers. A secular NSDR recording may retain some of that structure while using different language. Neither label guarantees that the experience suits you.

What to compare before pressing play

Choose the actual recording, not just its category. A practice described as yoga nidra could close with movement and open eyes, or soften towards sleep. Those endings serve different moments. The same is true of audio described as NSDR.

QuestionWhat it tells you
Does it return you to the room?Useful when you have something to do afterwards.
Does it fade into silence?Useful when the next step is bedtime.
Does it include an intention?Space for a value or personal direction you want to practise.
How much talking is there?Whether the guidance gives you enough support or more than you want.
Do the words feel comfortable?Whether the tradition, imagery and voice fit your preferences.

What the research measured

Most of the research behind NSDR studies yoga nidra itself, and it shows a practice doing measurable things. In a randomised trial of 20 adults, a yoga nidra session slowed the heart and shifted heart rate variability towards rest. In a PET study of eight experienced teachers, dopamine release rose by an estimated 65% during yoga nidra. In a randomised trial of adults with chronic insomnia, it increased deep sleep and lowered cortisol.

Results depend on who was studied, what they listened to and for how long, so each finding here links to its study. None of it makes rest equivalent to sleep: deep rest is a different state, useful in its own right.

Start with the moment, then make it yours

For a first daytime practice, choose a manageable length and an ending that brings your attention back. For bedtime, check for a soft ending and arrange the audio before you settle. You can use an established free recording while learning what you prefer; Huberman's guide links to his own sessions and other practitioners.

Personalisation adds another question: which words, voice and surroundings feel right for you? Yonida is being built around that fit, including your available time, arrival state, sound preferences and optional intention. Coming to iPhone; join the waitlist for an invitation. You can try guided rest with a free recording today.

Questions before your next practice

Do I need an intention for NSDR?

No. Choose a recording whose words fit you. An intention is common in yoga nidra, but you can rest without choosing one.

Can the same recording work during the day and at bedtime?

Check its ending first. A clear return to movement and open eyes suits a daytime break. A soft fade may suit bedtime. The label alone does not tell you which ending it has.
