Yoga Nidra for Sleep: How to Wind Down at Bedtime

Yoga nidra is a gentle way to wind down at bedtime: a voice guides attention through the body, the nervous system settles and sleep comes more easily. Choose a recording that fades out rather than bringing you back alert, and treat it as a way to settle, not a test you pass by falling asleep.

Give the evening somewhere to land

A busy mind often brings unfinished plans into bed. Before beginning audio, write down what needs attention tomorrow if that helps you let it wait. Reduce the amount of stimulation around you and arrange a comfortable sleeping environment. The recording should be one part of the evening, not another task with a deadline.

NHS guidance recommends a calm bedtime routine and includes meditation and calming audio among options. It also advises against forcing sleep. If you are still awake after a practice, you have not failed a test. Follow appropriate sleep guidance and return to bed when you feel sleepy rather than starting an endless sequence of recordings.

Check the final minute

A daytime yoga nidra track may ask you to move, deepen breathing and open your eyes. That is useful before returning to the day, but it may not be what you want in bed. Choose a soft sleep ending and check what the platform does after playback. A surprising advert or automatic next track can interrupt the quiet you arranged.

Set volume and playback before settling, keeping the screen out of your attention afterwards. If silence, a particular voice or certain imagery feels uncomfortable, choose another approach. You can prefer natural sounds or no sound; the experience does not need to resemble someone else's to be worthwhile.

What the sleep research shows

In a randomised trial of 41 adults with chronic insomnia, yoga nidra increased deep sleep, cut the time spent awake in the night, improved total sleep time and sleep quality, and lowered cortisol, the body's main stress hormone. Huberman recommends it to quiet the chatter that keeps you awake, and to fall asleep or back asleep when you wake in the night.

If difficulty sleeping persists, affects your daily life or concerns you, seek appropriate professional advice. Guided rest supports sleep; it does not replace sleep, medicine or care.
